The President of the United States
The Vice President of the United States
The First Lady
The Senators from NC, SC, and MI.

August 10, 1997

What is being done to determine the fate of Sgt. Dennis Lee Gauthier,
who was last seen in Pleiku, South Vietnam on October 31, 1969.
At that time he was a PFC serving with Company C, 3rd Battalion,
12th Infantry, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry, Ivy Division. He was serving
as a rifleman when his company was attempting to withdraw from an
ambush. Gauthier was hit in the leg, and another man was also hit,
but they could not be immediately evacuated. PFC Gauthier hid behind
a log while the others advanced.

On November 2, a reconnaissance platoon was able to search the area.
This platoon found and recovered the body of the other soldier, but found
no trace of Gauthier or any of his personal effects. Dennis was barely 20 years old.

Dennis Lee Gauthier is one of the 2000+ American Personnel unaccounted
for in the Vietnam War. Isn't it about time something was done?

These people that remain missing are more than just numbers, they are the
members of our armed service that fought for us. In a war they believed in
because they believed in our country. Are we really going to keep turning our
backs on these people? They deserve to be accounted for, they deserve to
come home. They deserve to be with their families.

Sir, what if it was one of your family members? Wouldn't you want to know
everything that can be done, is being done? I can't imagine being away from
my family for a few weeks, let alone 24 plus years. With your help we can
resolve the questions surrounding our missing American Heroes.

Please advise me of any action that is being taken by you or any other elected
or appointed official to determine his fate. In the event there is nothing being
done, please explain why not, and tell me how you personally plan to correct this
and prevent it from ever happening again.

Respectfully,
Elden H. Luffman Jr.
